Characteristics of a Child Three Years Old

Loving she is, and tractable, though wild;
And Innocence hath privilege in her
To dignify arch looks and laughing eyes;
And feats of cunning; and the pretty round
Of trespasses, affected to provoke
Mock–chastisement and partnership in play.
And, as a faggot sparkles on the hearth,
Not less if unattended and alone
Than when both young and old sit gathered round
And take delight in its activity;
Even so this happy Creature of herself
Is all–sufficient; solitude to her
Is blithe society; who fills the air
With gladness and involuntary songs.
Light are the sallies as the tripping fawn’s
Forth–startled from the fern where she lay couched;
Unthought-of, unexpected, as the stir
Of the soft breeze ruffling the meadow–flowers,
Or from before it chasing wantonly
The many–coloured images imprest
Upon the bosom of a placid lake.

Liebreich sie ist und umgänglich, doch wild,
und Unschuld ist ihr Privileg, den Schelm
zu adeln, der in ihrem Blick sich zeigt
mit lachend Augen, die verschmitzte List
beim Ringeltanz der kleinen Sünden, vor–
getäuscht, um Scheinbestrafung nur im Spiel
mir dir hervorzulocken, Funken gleich
vom Bündel Reisig, sprühend auf dem Herd,
ganz gleich, ob unbewacht sie und allein,
ob alt und jung versammelt sind im Rund
und freuen sich an ihr und ihrem Tun,
dies glückliche Geschöpf sich selbst ist es
genug, recht muntere Gesellschaft hat
es im Alleinsein, Fröhlichkeit man hört,
wenn unwillkürlich vor sich hin sie singt.
Leicht ihre Trippelsprünge sind wie bei
dem Kitz, das aufgeschreckt aus seinem Bett
im Farn, genau so unerwartet, wie
wenn eine sanfte Brise sich erhebt,
damit die Wiesenblumen kräuseln sich,
vielleicht auch vorher ausgelassen noch
die bunten Bilder zu verjagen, die
sich aufgeprägt dem Schoß des stillen Sees.
